Backup Camera while driving?

dthomson@...

We're getting a 2020 Navion 24D in about a month. I'm sure I'll find out quickly enough then, but can anyone tell me if the backup camera can be shown while driving? I find that very useful in my current Class C with an add-on backup cam.

Hello

99% sure Yes.

My 06 and my 2019 had that capability and it worked fine.

Thanks! Good to know. I thought they worked like that, but then I saw a bit on a video about mods about how someone was still waiting for a software hack to make it work...

Not with my 2020 24D. It is the Mercedes system which does not allow it.

Ugh. That's too bad. That explains the comment I saw about wanting a software hack, as well as the info about it working on some (e.g. older ones). Any news on a software update that could enable it?

I have same exact same vehicle and sorry to say but NO the camera does not allow you to see to the rear while driving. The chassis and electronics changed with the 2020 models (and i believe on a few late 2019’s as well). I added a separate rear camera and wired it to a monitor that clips over the rear view mirror. Bought everything from Tadi Bros. It was a wireless camera and monitor but it interfered with my SiriusXM radio so I was forced to hardwire it.

Good luck.

The backup camera is from MB Sprinter and only works in reverse. No rear view when in drive.

It's the head unit in the dash that determines how the cameras operate. The Jensen in our 2010 had a button to turn on the camera independent of whether the transmission was in reverse, as does the new Kenwood I installed. It allows me to use the camera as a rear-view mirror while driving, though I rarely do. Depending on what signal is sent to the head unit to indicate reverse, it may not be too difficult to tap into the reverse lead and add a switch to turn the camera on.

I have a 2020D. No you can't use the backup camera while driving. I installed a third party camera next to it. Works fine. Also has a front facing camera and recorder. No drilling necessary. Wireless. Made by HaloView

Last Summer I changed out my old Jensen radio in my Winnebago 2010 DL (2008 cab).  On my old set up the back up camera worked when I put the rig in reverse or when I pushed the rear camera button on the radio.  I quickly discovered that the new radio was different.  The back up camera only worked when I was in reverse.  I took it back to the installer and he told me that the federal regulations had changed.  In new radios, the back up cameras work only in reverse.  I don’t have a toad, but I do sometimes have a cargo carrier in back on the hitch.  So my installer put in a new switch on my dashboard that allows me to turn the camera on at any time.  It still automatically comes on when I put the rig in reverse, and now I can turn it on whenever I like also.

Brian Nystrom

That's interesting, as the Kenwood I installed last summer (DDX9907XR) has the capability to turn the camera on at will. It also comes on automatically in reverse, at which point it displays the parking guidelines. The guidelines do not display if you turn it on when driving, which makes sense. It's still listed on Kenwood's website and it's available from a bunch of sources online.

As for the switch, the question is whether there's actually voltage applied when the vehicle is in reverse or if it just grounds the circuit. If it's the latter, it's really simple to add a switch.
FWIW, the parking brake lead that's required in order to watch video on the Kenwood is just a ground, which I bypassed. I don't intend to watch videos while driving, but it was simpler to ground it in the dash than to run wiring from the switch at the hand brake.

No. Federal law went into effect 2018.

That may be true for cameras factory installed in vehicles, but it's obviously not the case for aftermarket units.

Depends on the radio and camera

The law dictates NO on 2018 on. Prior to that both our VNs did work when driving forward.

While 2018 and newer vehicles are required to have backup cameras per Federal Law, THERE IS NO FEDERAL LAW that says you can’t have the rear camera display while driving forward … it’s just how vehicle manufacturers set them up to operate.

When Mercedes had to begin equipping their vehicles with backup cameras in 2018 models, they set up Sprinter chassis like they set up their other vehicles and default to no rear camera display when the transmission isn’t in reverse.  Before 2018, Mercedes wasn’t required to equip Sprinters with rear cameras, so Winnebago and other RV manufacturers set things up based on the the dash head unit … like the Infotainment Center on many Views and Navions on Sprinter chassis pre-2018.

Thanks. I think that sums it up. I couldn't find any reference about the law not allowing backup viewing while driving.
I like mrhouck's solution of another switch installed to activate the rear view, but his is on an older unit, with the different infotainment screen. Has anyone done this with the newer infotainment screen?

No the factory back up camera can NOT monitor your toad while driving. Many people have added wireless cameras of different sorts, I went a little over the top with a new camera system that monitors the back, the sides and has a forward facing camera tied into a 7” screen that also is a DVR for all 4 channels. The cameras are echomaster https://tinyurl.com/yc63vbfz and the screen is  Rearviewsafety.com https://tinyurl.com/y9eh772s
