Navion Skylight replacement
John Beeley
A few months ago, bcbaetis@... asked this group about replacing the skylight in his Navion. I also have a '14 Navion G, and also have a problematic Dometic Midi Hieki Skylight. I read John Kirby's response about
the motor spindle, but didn't understand how that would apply to my
problem. Great pictures though. In my research I notice that the Dometic skylight is widely despised and many people have simply removed the skylight and sealed the opening. I don't understand this because I really like it; my skylight has been very helpful in many situations even though it has not worked with electric opener for several years. I was happy just pushing it open by hand and having the mechanism hold it in position. I like that it provides ventilation and an escape for the hotter/stale air while providing daylight illumination. But now it no longer stays open so I'm thinking about replacing it. Or fix the opening mechanism. I tried tinkering with the mechanism myself a while back but didn't get far - I'm not much of a tinkerer. Its never leaked, and I'm concerned that a new one would. Has anyone else replaced the skylight with a new one? Or repaired it? What did you install, since there are different models with different ways to open the hatch. Where do you get parts? Any leaks, or regrets? Thanks, John 14NiQ-G Mtn View CA |

We have the same problem. I'd go for a manual one.

I replaced one. It cost around $500 from Winnebago and $2500 to install! The install took about 15 minutes. The rip off was between the installer and the insurance company. I just happened to be there when it was replaced. Took no time at all.

Hi John. Have you thought about modifying the opening and replacing the skylight with an powered vent like a Fantastic Fan? That's my thought as I'm currently dealing with a broken "operator push bar" on my manual 06 unit. With a powered intake fan up front and an exhaust fan in the rear, one could really move some air on a warm day. Bob 06VH. On Wed, Mar 8, 2023, 5:51 PM John Beeley <jbeeley@...> wrote:

Eventually the plastic handle (the long white bar that goes from left side to right side, riding in tracks to open/close it) cracked from 15 years of sunlight, heat and stress, so I had to carefully open/close it with two hands. I would have repaired/replaced it but I ended up trading in the unit before I could. I loved the skylight and never would have considered sealing it up. I also love manual vent fans--it bothers me zero cranking the lid up, knowing that's more reliable than electric motors. -- Jake Previous 2007 Navion 23H towing 1987 Samurai tintop Currently experimenting with Class A life in a 2007 Tiffin Allegro 32BA Fred, towing a 2004 Tacoma 4x4 |

We have a 2014 Navion and by 2018 got tired of the skylight not working relays ago. I replaced it with a Max Air fan. We love the fan and never regretted the changeout. I prepared a plan, including photos, showing how I made the change. It includes a list of parts and where I got them. The job required a big of work and skill but nothing outrageous.
